The Village of Riverton is among the few municipalities that
own and operate all of their own utilities. The Village has a public works
staff of 14 employees that operate and maintain its water, sewer, gas, electric,
street and park departments. Below is a brief description of each department.

are

to
individual
departments,
the
village
prides
itself
on
its
cross-training
program
to
make
each
employee
familiar
with
the
other
departments.

Water
Department
Riverton
pumps
it's
water
from
4
wells
that
are
1
mile
south
of
its
treatment
plant
located
at
7th
and
Rt.
36.
It
is
aerated,
filtered,
softened
and
the required chemicals are added at this facility. It is then pumped into the
distribution system and to 2 elevated, 200,000 gallon storage tanks. Riverton
also supplies water
to
Spaulding and some outlying areas. The water
department is regulated by the USEPA and the
IEPA. The water department
employees are Tony Horner, John Hughes and Rick Vice.
Wastewater Department
Once used, the water must again be treated to allow for its
introduction back into the environment. This process is accomplished at Riverton's
Water Reclamation Center located on Riverton Road. Here the water is
treated by a bacteriological process and detention to remove the impurities.
After treatment the reclaimed water is discharged into the Sangamon River. The
Wastewater Dept. is regulated by the USEPA and IEPA The wastewater
employee is Coy Squires Jr.
Gas Department
The Village buys its natural gas
wholesale and then
distributes it thru its own distribution system. The Gas Dept. is regulated by
the
ICC. The gas department employees are Max Shekelton and Tim Shane.
Electric Department
The electric power for Riverton is purchased wholesale from
CWLP and distributed thru Riverton's own distribution system. This distribution
system is maintained by Adam Yakus and
Scott
Kinderman, both IBEW Union Linemen.
Streets/Parks
The Village has an extensive network of streets and parks
which requires constant maintenance. The employees that install, service and
maintain these important facilities are Mike Packenham and Jim Ford.
Locator
The Village is a member of
J.U.L.I.E., the nonprofit Joint
Utility Locating Information for Excavators service. Before any
excavation is begun, no matter how small or large, you are required to call
JULIE at
8-1-1
or
1-800-892-0123 to allow for the location of underground utilities to be
marked. The employee that comes out to mark the Village's utilities is Steve
Szoke.
Mechanics
The Village uses many pieces of equipment to maintain
its utilities and streets. The employees that
maintain,
repair,
fabricate and
service
the equipment are Jim Roberts and Jordan Lyons. They also maintain the Village Police squad
cars.
During
the
summer
months,
they
and
the
other
employees,
mow
the
many
acres
of
Village
parks
and
grounds.
